Second big quake hits northern Italy, 10 dead

- An earthquake struck 


northern Italy on Tuesday, killing at least 




10 people, damaging buildings and 


spreading panic among thousands of


 residents still living in tents after a tremor


 shook the region just over a week ago, 


destroying their homes.

Olympic torch: Doctor Who star Matt Smith carries flame

Doctor Who star Matt Smith swapped his sonic screwdriver for the Olympic torch as the relay began its journey from Cardiff to Swansea.
He ran an early morning leg in the Welsh capital, where the successful television show is based.
Hurdler Colin Jackson, who in 1988 won Olympic silver in Seoul, will run one of the day's final legs in Swansea.
Large crowds turned out in sunshine to watch the relay travel from the Welsh capital to the valleys and the coast.
Smith ran from the historic Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay to the National Assembly building, just before 06:30 BST - earlier than planned.

New Zealand's Christchurch shaken by 5.2 quake


WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's second largest city Christchurch was shaken by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The government seismology agency said the quake was centered 10 kilometers east of the city at a depth of 11 kilometers.
The city was devastated by a force 6.3 quake in February last year, killing nearly 200 people, and destroying the central business district and making large areas of surrounding suburbs uninhabitable.

World's tallest tower, the Tokyo Skytree, opens


TOKYO (AP) — The world's tallest tower and Japan's biggest new landmark, the Tokyo Skytree, opened to the public on Tuesday.
Nearly 8,000 visitors were expected to take high-speed elevators up to the observation decks of the 634-meter (2,080-foot) tower to mark its opening. Some reportedly waited in line more than a week to get the coveted tickets for a panoramic view, though Tuesday ended up being cloudy in Tokyo.

Powerful quake kills at least 4 in northern Italy

Peru-Chile border hit by 6.2 quake, no damage seen


LIMA/SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook the border area straddling southern Peru and northern Chile early on Monday, but there were no reports of damage, the Andean neighbours' national emergency offices said.
The U.S. Geogolgical Survey said the quake struck 41 miles (66 km) east-northeast of Tacna in Peru, and 66 miles (107 km) northeast of Arica in the far north of world No. 1 copper producer Chile.
